Nostalgia works against this film. You crave the songs you are familiar with or new ones that are just as good to replace them. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a toe tapper but you have trouble keeping up with the words. One production after the other it’s reminiscent of its fore-bearer but is missing the ease and naturalness of its 2 ancestral stars. The screen comes alive when Dick Van Dyke graces it. The cast is good (love Emily!) it’s just the magic of the first one that’s missing or is it just that it’s not my first rodeo. As far as reboots go, this one comes the closest to leaving you smiling and not feeling as disappointed in its attempt. Either way, not date night but family worthy.
